At a total length of 2,689 miles, the King Charles III England Coast Path is the world’s longest continuous coastal footpath and one of the very few routes that allow hikers to walk all the way around an entire country.

Why is the path called ‘King Charles III England Coast Path’

The path was originally named the ‘England Coast Path’. In 2023, after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, it was decided to rename the path the ‘King Charles III England Coast Path’ to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III and recognise his work supporting the natural world.

How was the path created and developed

The creation of the King Charles III England Coast Path was a huge challenge! It began under Gordon Brown’s Labour government 18 years ago. Requiring new legislation, the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009. One thousand miles of new path had to be created through areas previously inaccessible to the public. 

Who will maintain the King Charles III England Coast Path

Natural England developed the King Charles III England Coast Path. The path will continue to be managed by Natural England, working in conjunction with landowners and local authorities.

Where is the start of the King Charles III England Coast Path

There is no standard start to the King Charles III England Coast Path, unlike most other national trails. The King Charles III England Coast Path is, however, divided into eight sections that, by default, start and end at specific locations around the coast of England.

Have all of England’s coastal paths been combined into the King Charles III England Coast Path?

The King Charles III England Coast Path connects all of England’s coastal trails without merging them into one single, unified path. Each of England’s coastal paths will retain its own identity, but will share the branding and logos of the wider King Charles III England Coast Path.
